A Poem for My Valentine

As Valentine's Day draws near, I would like to share a poem I wrote for Les after I had been diagnosed with breast cancer and undergone surgery:

You are the one who stood by me
You are the one who gave me
the news I did not want to hear

You are the one who held my hand
when they wheeled me into surgery
Yours was the first face I saw when I awoke
Yours were the tears that mingled with mine
as they removed the bandages

You are the one
who never abandoned me
to lessen your pain

When I hurt and felt battered
it was your arms that held me
it was your hands that caressed me
it was your eyes that said
even more loudly than your words
"You are still beautiful"

You are the one who stood by me
through the terror, the pain, the healing–
into love

You are the one I cherish
more than life itself–
My love and gratitude are
beyond speaking

This makes me cry. But in this case, it’s a good cry. Thank you for the beautiful love poem you wrote for your dear Les. It’s just lovely.
